Keeping warm

If the power is off in winter, the heating usually is too. Be Ready adds warm clothing to the list.

What you need

Blankets or sleeping bags

Warm clothes for everyone

Layers, hats and thick socks.

Pick one room

Sweden’s emergency advice says to pick one room and keep it warm. We’d add: close the doors, draw the curtains and get everyone in there.

Don't: use a gas or paraffin heater, barbecue or camping stove indoors to keep warm. They give off carbon monoxide.

What to look for

  • A blanket or sleeping bag for each person
  • A sleeping bag comfort rating around 5°C is plenty indoors
  • Hats, thick socks and layers you already own

What we'd skip

  • Electric blankets and heated throws. They need the power you haven't got.
  • Anything with "arctic" or "expedition" in the name. You're in the living room.
