Water: how much for 3 days

Be Ready puts a number on water for the first time, and bottled water from the supermarket is the simplest way to have it.

Updated

What you need

Drinking water: 3 litres per person per day

On a budget

Supermarket 5-litre bottles of still water

Honestly the cheapest way to do it. Use them and replace them every six months.

Any supermarket, own brand is fine

Water for cooking and washing: 2 litres per person per day

Water for pets: about 1 litre a day per dog, 0.25 litres per cat or small pet

Keeping it fresh

Use bottled water and replace it every six months. Put a reminder in your phone.

What to look for

  • Food-grade plastic, if you're filling your own containers
  • Bottles or cans you can still lift when they're full
  • Shapes that stack, so it all fits under the stairs

What we'd skip

  • Water filter straws. You're at home, with bottles.
  • Collapsible water carriers. The reviews put us off.
